Welcome to the Data Center Footprint project.
This project is a digital common, initiated by Hubblo, financed by Ademe and the MACIF foundation.
The project and its context are described on the call-for-commons website.
This project aims to propose an accessible way to assess the environmental impacts of datacenters. To do so a web interface will allow anyone to estimate the impact of a datacenter providing its characteristics (surface, power, PUE, WUE, etc.).
The environnemental impact assessment done by this tool is proposed at the datacenter level but also at the level of a colocation service, or a cloud service proposed by the operator. Those service-level assessments are based on the Cloud & Datacenter Product Category Rule methodology built by ADEME.
The overall evaluation of environmental impacts is based on the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, defined in the ISO 14040 and 14044 norms and detailled for the ICT sector in the ITU L.1410. Results of those evaluations will contain impact assessment for multiple impact criterias, up to the 16 impact criterias defined in PEF 3.1.
The DCFootprint project is about more than just an open-source tool. This is a digital common, that anyone can clone, fork, host and use, according to the terms of the AGPLv3 licence. This tool is based on a software library that any programmer can use as the calculation part of another evaluation tool. A documentation will also describe precisely the calculation methodology.
